Choosing a Video Card Part 1 : Expansion Slot Type Used

To add a video card to a computer, must be available expansion slot on the motherboard. There are several types of options available expansion slots, depending on the generation motherboard used. Options available expansion slot in motherboard determine the type of video card that can be added.

Generational differences motherboard, making expansion slot in it there are different types of slots. Previous generation motherboards have previous expansion slot, and the latest generation have the latest expansion slots as well. However there are still some new motherboards include expansion slots earlier.

Expansion slot for a video card called the PCI slot prior or Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI actually there before ISA slots). For now, the PCI slot is no longer included in the motherboard. And although it is still included, usually used instead to slot video card, but for a card (card) such as sound cards

Choosing a Video Card Part 1

After generations of PCI slots, AGP slot appears (Accelerted Graphics Port). AGP slot is an expansion slot that is used to replace the PCI slots that are no longer sufficient to handle the data traffic between CPU and video card. After so long, emerged with a new architecture called PCI Express. PCI Express architecture is different from previous data traffic architecture: PCI and AGP. PCI Express to transmit serial data, no such parallel PCI and AGP.

PCI Express slot available on the motherboard there are several types depending on the number of lane it uses. For PCI Express slot is used as a video card expansion slot, usually a type of PCI Express x16 slot. As for the type of card (card) Other uses PCI Express x1 slot.

Motherboard with different generations, affecting also the kind of slot provided. For motherboards with PCI Express architecture, it would be better if in choosing a video card that also has a PCI Express slot. As for a motherboard that has an AGP slot, then have to choose a video card with AGP slot as well. So it can not be exchanged between the two, in addition to its architecture is different, also the type of connector will not fit.

The good news, for some of the latest motherboards that already has the architecture of PCI Express data traffic, still have PCI slots and AGP. So even though there are already PCI Express slot, the motherboard can still be fitted with a video card AGP or PCI slot. However, for now it is better to avoid the selection of a video card with AGP slots PCI slots especially. Choose a video card with PCI Express interface slot, if the motherboard already has owned a PCI Express slot.
